Privacy Policy
Last updated: 27 September 2026
The short version
- Munin has no account, no ads and no tracking. The only usage data is an anonymous count of when the purchase screen is shown (see Purchases). We do not run a server.
- Your puzzles, ratings, reviews, stats and settings are stored on your device.
- The app goes online for two things only: when you ask it to import your games from Lichess or Chess.com, and to check Munin Full Access with Apple and RevenueCat (this happens automatically, also if you never buy, for example when the app starts or the purchase screen is shown; see Purchases).
- We (the developer) never receive your games, your chess usernames or your training data.
Who is responsible
Munin is made by Jacob Lassen, an individual developer in Norway ("we", "us"). Contact: lassen90@gmail.com · munin-chess.netlify.app
What happens on your device only
Everything below is stored and processed on your iPhone, iPad or Mac and is not sent to us or anyone else:
- your puzzle attempts, rating, rank, placement-test result, review queue, cycles, streak and stats;
- the chess engine (Arasan), which runs on your device for "play on" and for analysing your imported games;
- the puzzle collection (275,000 puzzles from the Lichess puzzle database, bundled with the app);
- your settings, including the Lichess and Chess.com usernames you type in;
- your mistake book: positions from your imported games, with the game link, date and your opponent's public username.
Puzzle explanations are written on your device from built-in templates. This runs entirely on your device; no puzzle or game data is sent anywhere to make an explanation. If you mark an explanation as wrong ("Wrong explanation?"), that report is kept on your device only; it is never sent to us.
Importing your games (Lichess and Chess.com)
The mistake book is optional. If you type a Lichess and/or Chess.com username and start an import, the app sends requests directly from your device to that site's public API:
- Lichess (lichess.org): one request for up to 50 of your recent finished games.
- Chess.com (api.chess.com): one request for your list of monthly game archives, then one request per month for up to the 12 most recent months.
Each request contains the username you typed (in the web address) and a standard app identifier ("Munin/<version>" plus the app name and our support contact). It contains no other information about you. Like any internet request, the site also sees your device's IP address. The games you get back are public on those sites already.
This data goes to Lichess or Chess.com, not to us. Their own privacy policies apply to what they do with the requests:
- Lichess: https://lichess.org/privacy
- Chess.com: https://www.chess.com/legal/privacy
The analysis of your games happens on your device. Nothing is imported unless you start it.
No sync between devices
Munin does not sync. Your training data stays on the device where you use Munin; it is not stored in iCloud or sent to us, and each device (iPhone, iPad, Mac) keeps its own progress. Only your purchase follows your Apple Account, so you can restore Munin Full Access on your other devices.
Purchases
Munin is free to try: a number of puzzles each day, the daily puzzle and your reviews included, are always free, and everything is unlocked for a 3-day trial. The trial is a free in-app purchase handled by Apple like any other: it collects nothing new, and its date stays with Apple's record of your purchases. Munin Full Access unlocks everything. It is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. Payment is handled by Apple; we never see your name, Apple Account or payment details. Apple's standard terms apply (https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula/).
To check and restore your purchase, the app uses RevenueCat (RevenueCat, Inc., USA), which acts as our data processor. When the app checks your purchase status (at start-up, also if you haven't bought anything) or you buy or restore, RevenueCat receives:
- your purchase and transaction information from Apple (which product, when, price and currency, receipt data);
- a random, anonymous app user ID created by the app (not your name, email or Apple Account);
- that the purchase screen was shown (an anonymous event, so we can see how many who see it choose to buy);
- technical information such as the device model, OS version, app version, the store country, and Apple's vendor identifier for this app (IDFV), plus your IP address as part of the connection.
We use this only to give you access to what you bought, prevent fraud, and see aggregate sales and purchase-screen figures in RevenueCat's dashboard. It is not linked to your identity and not used for advertising. RevenueCat stores data on Amazon Web Services in the USA; transfers are covered by contractual safeguards. RevenueCat's privacy policy: https://www.revenuecat.com/privacy
The legal basis is performance of the contract (delivering what you paid for, GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)) and our legitimate interest in preventing fraud and understanding sales (Art. 6(1)(f)).
What we do not do
- No account or sign-in.
- No advertising and no ad networks.
- No analytics or crash-reporting SDKs in the app beyond the anonymous purchase-screen event sent to RevenueCat.
- No tracking across apps or websites, and no selling or sharing of data with data brokers.
- No access to your location, contacts, photos, camera, microphone or health data.
If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in your device's settings, Apple may give us anonymous crash reports and usage statistics. That is controlled by Apple and you can turn it off in Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements.
Keeping and deleting your data
- On your device: deleting Munin deletes all its data from that device.
- Lichess / Chess.com: we have nothing to delete there; contact those sites about their own logs.
- RevenueCat: contact us and we will delete the anonymous purchase record at RevenueCat. Your purchase itself stays with Apple, so you can still restore it.
Children
Munin is suitable for all ages and has no social features or chat. Because the app collects no personal data itself, it does not knowingly collect personal data from children. The optional game import sends a username that the user types to Lichess or Chess.com; parents may want to help younger children with this. Purchases go through Apple, where Family Sharing and Ask to Buy apply.
Your rights (GDPR)
Under the GDPR you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to the processing of your personal data, and to data portability. Since almost everything stays on your device, you already control it directly. For anything we or RevenueCat hold, contact lassen90@gmail.com. We will answer within one month.
You can also complain to the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet, https://www.datatilsynet.no) or to the authority in your own country.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top and, for important changes, mention it in the app's release notes.
